Photo countdown: Five days to the Alamo Bowl

There are only five days until the 2013 Alamo Bowl where the Oregon Ducks will face the Texas Longhorns. Every day we’ll post a meaningful photo from the year to recap the eventful season and get fans prepped for Oregon’s matchup in the Lone Star State. Be sure to check out the rest of the Emerald’s football coverage leading up to the game.

Freshman tight end Johnny Mundt has seen a breakout season after making his starting debut against Tennessee in which he played for a career day. With the recent suspension of Pharaoh Brown, Mundt now finds himself as a primary on the depth chart for the Alamo Bowl. He has notched the most receiving yards by an Oregon tight end (121) since 2009, and made career-firsts of five catches and two touchdowns against the Vols. Expectations are high for Mundt on Monday against the Longhorns.

There are only six days until the 2013 Alamo Bowl where the Oregon Ducks will face the Texas Longhorns. Since his redshirt freshman season, Grasu has been the starting center for the Ducks, taking over from Jordan Holmes. He earned All-Freshman Second Team in 2011, All-Pac-12 First Team in 2012, and he also is on the watch list for Rimington Trophy. Currently projected to be the No. 1 NFL draft pick among centers, Grasu has certainly made a name for himself as a Duck. His parents are a familiar sight at Oregon games, home and away: they attend every one. What remains to be seen is how Grasu and his teammates will hold their own against the Texas Longhorns’ D-line in San Antonio.

If there’s one thing Oregon fans can count on, it’s that The Duck (also known as Puddles) will provide no shortage of entertainment during a football game. Whether he’s doing pushups along the sidelines to celebrate Oregon points or crowd surfing across a sea of fans in the student section at Autzen stadium, The Duck is always up to something during a game. From his infamous brawl with The Cougar in 2007 to a satirical run for political office in 2012, The Duck is no stranger to controversy. Having traveled with his team to every away game but Arizona this season, The Duck knows that his familiar face and comedic style of cheerleading will always find a welcome home in the hearts of Oregon fans.

Photo countdown: Eight days until the Alamo Bowl

There are only eight days until the 2013 Alamo Bowl where the Oregon Ducks will face the Texas Longhorns. Oregon’s D-line is often referred to as one of the most under appreciated aspects of the Ducks’ program. Led by seniors Taylor Hart and Wade Keliikipi, the Oregon defensive unit will be faced with a hard-charging, big O-line from the Texas Longhorns, led by all Big-12 second teamers Donald Hawkins and Trey Hopkins who jumpstart Texas’ 38th ranked rushing attack. After struggling to stop the run during punishing losses to Arizona and Stanford, will Oregon’s defense be able to handle similar challenges from the Longhorns?

In his second season as starting quarterback for the Ducks, sophomore quarterback Marcus Mariota has led his team to a 10-2 season while racking up a combined 3,994 yards en route to 30 touchdowns through the air and on the ground. Having spent much of the season as Heisman Trophy frontrunner before Oregon’s losses to Stanford and Arizona, Mariota’s recent decision to forgo a shot at the NFL Draft and stay at Oregon another year surprised many in the Eugene community. The Honolulu native will be expected to lead his team against a stout defensive line in the Longhorns and all eyes will be on the QB’s left knee, still recovering from an MCL injury sustained during the second half of the UCLA game on Oct. 26. Will Mariota rebound from an unusually close game against the Oregon State Beavers and show his old form against Texas?

Photo countdown: 10 days to the Alamo Bowl

There are only 10 days until the 2013 Alamo Bowl where the Oregon Ducks will face the Texas Longhorns. In his first year as head coach for the Ducks, head coach Mark Helfrich was widely seen as taking the driver’s seat of a nationally competitive program from his predecessor, Chip Kelly. Pre-season expectations ran high, with Oregon ranked No. 2 as the regular season kicked off against the California Bears, and Oregon fans seemed confident that their Ducks were headed to a record fifth straight BCS game. Whispers of a national championship matchup against the Alabama Crimson Tide trailed the Ducks as they rolled over their first eight opponents. Stunning upset losses on the road against Stanford (26-20) and Arizona (42-16), however, put Helfrich under the intense spotlight of fans and critics alike, who have questioned the freshman coach’s ability to prepare his team. With Texas head coach Mack Brown set to step down after his final game with the Longhorns, can Mark Helfrich silence his critics with commanding and well-coached victory in the Alamo Bowl?

Photos: Florida Georgia Line headlines sellout night of country music at Matthew Knight Arena

Florida Georgia Line’s quadruple platinum hit song “Cruise” has dominated Billboard’s Hot Country Songs Chart, holding the No. 1 spot for 19 straight weeks. That is the longest stretch for any song in the past 50 years. On Friday night, they headlined a sellout crowd at Matthew Knight Arena, estimated at 9,500. The group claimed it was the fastest sellout for a country show at the venue.

Florida Georgia Line has skyrocketed since releasing back-to-back, multi-week #1 smashes in the US and Canada with the platinum-certified “Get Your Shine On” and “Cruise.” The record–breaking duo, comprised of Georgian native Tyler Hubbard and Florida’s Brian Kelley is the first in 21 years to top the Country airplay charts with their first two singles.
