The air was silent in the Malcolm Moos Health Sciences Tower on Wednesday as onlookers passed a group of about 70 students lying flat on the floor.
The students, from the University of Minnesota's Medical School and School of Public Health, joined students across the country as they staged a "die-in" to protest police brutality and health care disparities.

Hundreds of protesters remained outside the University of Minnesota’s TCF Bank Stadium on Sunday afternoon as the Minnesota Vikings and Washington Redskins game kicked off.
After hours of marching and chanting, the protest had quieted by game time, as most demonstrators listened to speeches outside the stadium from local and American Indian officials.
Minnesota faces Washington after months of controversy over the visiting team’s name, which many have called demeaning and offensive to American Indians.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Jeff Johnson made a last-minute election stop at the University of Minnesota on Thursday.
Johnson spent an hour with about 40 students and faculty members at the Humphrey School of
Public Affairs’ Humphrey Forum, where he promoted three platform efforts — job creation, evaluating government’s role and K-12 education reform — and a willingness to compromise across party lines.
Johnson, who serves as a Hennepin County commissioner, is running against Democrat and incumbent Gov. Mark Dayton.

University of Minnesota police Chief Greg Hestness will retire in June after serving over 11 years as the University’s assistant vice president for public safety and chief of police, according to an email sent to University students, faculty members and staff members Friday.
In the email, Vice President for University Services Pamela Wheelock said Hestness has led the University through "major changes" like the opening of the Green Line light rail and last fall's jump in off-campus robberies.

Some Minneapolis restaurants and bars can now choose to provide only gender-neutral, single-user bathrooms instead of the traditional gendered variety, City Council members unanimously decided Friday.
The council also passed a resolution that encourages gender-neutral restrooms throughout the city. The measure serves to better accommodate the transgender community, council members say.

The University of Minnesota’s newly developed strategic plan went through one of its final rounds of feedback Wednesday. The Board of Regents will review the document next week.
Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Karen Hanson, along with President Eric Kaler, presented an update of the plan to nearly 100 people at the West Bank’s Cowles Auditorium. Attendees expressed excitement with the plan, which includes measures to increase interdisciplinary work, engage with more local communities and jumpstart diversity initiatives.
