Newly elected city officials visited the University of Minnesota on Tuesday to discuss solutions to crime after a tumultuous fall semester, which saw an uptick in violent crime on or near campus.
Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges and City Councilmen Jacob Frey, DFL-Ward 3, and Blong Yang, DFL-Ward 5, arrived on campus just days after being sworn into office, accompanied by University administrators and local police.

While an attempted robbery of a student Thursday adds to a list of violent crimes prompting alerts this year, University of Minnesota police announced Friday they arrested several suspects in other crimes.
This week, University police arrested the last two of three suspects of a Nov. 20 assault and robbery of a student.

A University of Minnesota student was the victim of an attempted armed robbery in the Carlson School of Management Sunday afternoon, according to an email crime alert sent by University Police Chief Greg Hestness to faculty, staff and students on Monday.
University police Deputy Chief Chuck Miner addressed the media Tuesday and said they had not apprehended any suspects, but had received one “good” tip.

While walking to class around 9:20 a.m. near the intersection of 14th Avenue Southeast and Sixth Street Southeast, a man approached the student, showed her a gun and demanded her valuables, the alert said. The suspect then took the victim’s backpack and fled.
