Wheelock responds to riotous activity in Dinkytown

Stangler, Sintjago win campus elections

On Friday night, University of Minnesota students chose Joelle Stangler as the 2014-15 undergraduate student body president and Alfonso Sintjago as the graduate student body president.

Stangler, current intern coordinator for the Minnesota Student Association and a representative to the Board of Regents, will lead MSA along with her vice president, John Reichl. The pair received 75.8 percent of the vote.

Northrop opens its doors with fanfare and a ballet

The Northrop Mall got its centerpiece back Friday as the auditorium officially opened its doors for the first time since 2011.

Changes made to the main theater, totaling $88.2 million, include adding two new balconies, one additional stage and an overall smaller theater setting.

The renovations also added four ticket windows, nearly doubled the number of restrooms and increased the building's size by 10,520 sq. ft.

To celebrate the grand reopening, the University of Minnesota has brought the America Ballet Theatre to perform Friday evening at 8 p.m.

Gophers fire Borton

Pam Borton has been relieved of her duties as head coach of the Gophers women’s basketball team, the University of Minnesota announced Friday.

“We have extremely high expectations for our women’s basketball program,” Athletics Director Norwood Teague said at a press conference Friday. “Our goal is to be the best women’s basketball program both in the Big Ten and at a national level.”

Those high expectations pushed Borton out. She hadn’t led the Gophers to the NCAA Tournament since 2009.

Twin Cities campus to go smoke-free in July

A new policy, set to take effect July 1, bans smoking, selling, distributing or advertising tobacco products and electronic cigarettes on University property.

Minneapolis City Council denies Doran’s Dinkytown demolition permit

The Dinkytown building housing Mesa Pizza and other businesses is safe for the time being.

The Minneapolis City Council voted 8-4 Friday to deny Doran Companies the demolition permit for 1319 Fourth St. SE until a historic designation study can determine if the business district is worth preserving.

The decision will delay Doran Companies’ plans to build a six-story, $25 million hotel near the University of Minnesota as the study could take months or even a year.

Regents to vote on reallocating $4.1M for safety initiative

The University of Minnesota’s Board of Regents will consider a reallocation of $4.1 million to aid its campus safety initiative at its meeting next week.

The money would come from the Facilities Management Repair and Replacement funds and be reinvested in the initiative, according to a press release sent Friday.

Betsy Hodges, city officials talk crime on campus with students

Newly elected city officials visited the University of Minnesota on Tuesday to discuss solutions to crime after a tumultuous fall semester, which saw an uptick in violent crime on or near campus.

Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges and City Councilmen Jacob Frey, DFL-Ward 3, and Blong Yang, DFL-Ward 5, arrived on campus just days after being sworn into office, accompanied by University administrators and local police.
