Following death of Philando Castile, Falcon Heights city officials hold emergency meeting

City officials from the Falcon Heights City Council held an emergency meeting Friday afternoon, following the fatal police shooting of St. Paul man, Philando Castile.

On Wednesday night, Castile was shot by St. Anthony Police Officer Jeronimo Yanez, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension confirmed in a press release on Thursday. Castile was pronounced dead at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis on Wednesday night.

Bail hearing for Black Lives Matter shooter draws controversy

Protesters attended a bail hearing Wednesday for Allen Scarsella, one of the men who shot five community members at a 4th Precinct protest, following the fatal police shooting of Jamar Clark.

Scarsella claimed self-defense in the shooting, which caused renewed protests at the Hennepin County Government Center.

Judges ultimately denied reduced bail because they said Scarsella poses a threat to the public.

Philando Castile shooting shows reality of racial bias in law enforcement says Obama, Gov. Dayton

Following national outcry, Gov. Mark Dayton called for a federal investigation into the death of Philando Castile — a black, St. Paul man — who was killed in an officer-involved shooting Wednesday night.

Castile was shot by a St. Anthony law enforcement officer in Falcon Heights during what appeared to be a routine traffic stop for a broken taillight. The police officer involved has been put on administrative leave, Saint Anthony Village City Manager Mark Casey said in a statement.

Former UMD administrator sues over discrimination

A former administrator claims the University of Minnesota-Duluth discriminated against her based on her sexual orientation and disability.

In the lawsuit filed against the University’s Board of Regents in Hennepin County District Court last Wednesday, Angie Nichols — the former director of UMD’s Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Services — alleged that she experienced months of discrimination and faced retaliation after she raised concerns about the school not renewing the contracts of four openly gay or bisexual UMD women’s athletics coaches.

University of Minnesota awards Prince with honorary doctorate

He went by Prince, then an unpronounceable glyph, and now a new moniker has been added to the mix — Dr. Prince.

On Friday, the University of Minnesota’s Board of Regents unanimously voted to award an Honorary Doctor of Humane Arts to Prince. The preeminent Minnesota-born singer, songwriter, actor, producer and multi-instrumentalist passed away on April 21.

William Tolman, chair of the University Senate’s All-University Honors Committee, said though the award is being conferred posthumously, the final process for honoring Prince began in the fall of 2015.

From dusk-to-dawn, Northern Lights will kick-off its “Northern Sparks” art celebration Saturday — and this year, the festival is bringing attention to hard-hitting issues.

The free, all-night festival — which began in 2011 — is an annual assemblage of art, music and food. More than 70 artists and artists’ collectives will have their work on display at Saturday’s festival, and most of the pieces reflect on the festival’s general theme, “Climate Chaos / Climate Rising.”
