University of Minnesota alumna helps The Daily Show’s DNC coverage in Philly

After Eileen May heard The Daily Show chose her venue as its remote location for coverage of the Democratic National Convention, her first call was to her mentor, Kathleen Spehar.

May and Spehar met each other while they were both at the University of Minnesota more than decade ago. Spehar was an adjunct professor, and May, a young theatre student.

“The long story long of it is that when The Daily Show called me a year ago, I called [Spehar] immediately,” May said.

University of Minnesota Department of Philosophy receives $1.2 million donation

The University of Minnesota’s Department of Philosophy received the largest donation in the program’s history on Wednesday.

Dr. Stephen Setterberg of PrairieCare — a local, psychiatric health care provider — donated over $1.2 million to the department. According to University officials, the donation will be allotted incrementally over the next five years.

University of Minnesota Department of Philosophy receives $1.2 million donation

Recent thefts hit Pokémon Go players on University of Minnesota campus

“Pokémon Go” players now have something other than rare Pokémon to watch out for. 

This week, the University of Minnesota Police Department responded to two incidents of phone theft involving individuals playing the game.

According to police incident reports, one of the thefts occurred at 222 Pleasant St. SE on Monday night. The second occurred late Tuesday night at 207 Pleasant St. SE.

Hodges: All Minneapolis police officers will be equipped with body cameras by October

Starting Wednesday, nearly 200 Minneapolis police officers will wear body cameras daily.

Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges and Minneapolis Police Chief Janeé Harteau held a press conference Tuesday to announce the update to the camera rollout.

The Minneapolis Police Department’s 1st Precinct officers were first to receive the cameras on July 11.

Officers in the 4th Precinct are currently undergoing body camera training, and will wear the new cameras by the end of July.

Two Minneapolis Park Board officers to resign

Two Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board officers announced their resignation Friday. The announcement follows criticism over racial inequity on the board from black community members last spring.

Board President Liz Wielinski and Vice President Scott Vreeland will step down at a board meeting next Wednesday, but said they plan to maintain their board seats, according to letters the pair sent out on Friday.

While Vreeland didn’t state a reason for his resignation in the letter, Wielinkski cited health concerns.

In state legislature, special session likely

After Minnesota lawmakers convened Friday morning, a special session in late August looks likely.

During the two-hour meeting, Gov. Mark Dayton and legislative leaders spoke at a press conference about their special session bid.

“I will say that we had a really good meeting,” said House Speaker Kurt Daudt, R-Crown.  “We have decided, I think, that it’s in the best interest of everyone if we do a special session.”

Daudt said they are aiming to hold the special session during the third week of August.

In Loring Park, protesters rally for justice in fatal shooting of Philando Castile

Over a hundred protesters gathered in Loring Park Saturday to stand in solidarity after the death of Philando Castile.

The rally, led by Nekima Levy-Pounds — president of Minneapolis’s chapter of the NAACP — and other leaders in the community demanded changes to the criminal justice system; in addition, the demonstrators advocated for increased accountability among police departments, nationwide.

Body pulled from Mississippi River, says University of Minnesota Police

Late Saturday evening, the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office recovered the body of an adult man from the Mississippi River, according to the University of Minnesota Police Department. 

Officials are awaiting identification of the body by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's office.

On Friday, an ongoing investigation was underway for a missing person, according to a campus-wide public safety alert emailed by UMPD. 

In the notice, UMPD stated that 55-year-old Rinzin Dorjee was reported missing by a coworker at the University late Thursday night.
