The Oregon native spent one year at UCLA before transferring to UNLV and will now finish his collegiate athletic career as a Duck.

Zone Read AM: Bulls shock heat, Nets reach out to Phil Jackson

Monday evening, the NBA Playoffs saw the first legitimate stunner of the second round when the Chicago Bulls upset the Miami Heat at home 93-86.

The Bulls entered the game with numerous players on the injury list, most notably point guard Derrick Rose, who has still yet to return from a torn ACL he suffered in the playoffs last year.

Chicago dealt the Heat their first loss of the 2013 playoffs in surprising fashion with Nate Robinson pacing the Bulls with 27 points.

Game two is Wednesday night in Miami.

By now, seemingly everyone in the Western world has heard about NBA player Jason Collins coming out as a gay man via a Sports Illustrated article. For the most part, Collins has received overwhelming support and admiration for his announcement from the sports world and otherwise.

ESPN.com’s Ted Miller takes a look at how the Pac-12 conference has responded to his announcement.

Alongside Fenway Park in Boston, Wrigley Field is arguably the most historic ballpark in all of Major League Baseball. Home to the oft picked on Chicago Cubs, the 99-year-old stadium has played host to some of the most memorable moments in baseball and Chicago history.

However, if new upgrades for the century-old stadium are not approved, Tom Ricketts, the owner of the team, has not ruled out leaving the historic ballpark in search of greener pastures.

His current proposal requests more night games, a big screen jumbotron in left field and an upgraded clubhouse for the team.

One of the biggest stars in the NHL will start the postseason on the bench. Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins has still not healed enough from a broken jaw he suffered over a month ago and will not be available for game one against the New York Islanders.

Crosby hopes that he will be able to return later in the series but as of now is waiting for doctor approval to strap the skates back on.

Zone Read AM: Kings to stay in Sacramento, Jackson pondering Toronto

The movement to relocate the Sacramento Kings to Seattle took a major hit on Monday when an NBA committee voted unanimously to reject the proposal to relocate the franchise.

Having long been the subject and scrutiny, the Kings seemed destined to head to Seattle and resurrect the SuperSonics franchise that left the city and relocated to Oklahoma City.

While the bid for the resurrection of the SuperSonics is not completely dead, things have definitely shifted in a major way to the Kings staying in Sacramento.

It appears as though Tim Tebow was the odd man out in the Big Apple. The polarizing quarterback was released on Monday morning by the New York Jets and is now looking for a place to call home for the 2013 season.

With the departure of Tebow, the Jets now currently have five quarterbacks left on their roster, including struggling starter Mark Sanchez. Sanchez has been the subject of speculation for quite some months now, and many experts are unsure if he will be the opening day starter.

Jets general manager John Idzik has done little to endorse Sanchez after taking West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith in the second round of the draft and saying that all five quarterbacks will compete to be the starter.

The news that in all likelihood the Sacramento Kings will not move to Seattle is beginning to ripple down into others areas of the NBA. In particular, now that Seattle will probably be without a franchise for a little longer, the Toronto Raptors are making a stronger push to bring former Lakers head coach Phil Jackson on as team president.

Jackson retired from the game a year ago and was then almost lured out of retirement by his old team, but in the end Los Angeles decided to go with Mike D’Antoni as their head man.

Since this initial interest, Jackson has expressed interest in coming back to the game, particularly in a front office capacity.

Barner and Boyett both hear name called

The NFL draft began its third day on Saturday and two more former Oregon Ducks heard their names called in New York City. After falling further than initially anticipated, running back Kenjon Barner was drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the sixth round, with the 182nd overall pick.

After waiting his turn behind now 49er LaMichael James, Barner had a breakout senior season and was anticipated by many media pundits to go either in the late third or early fourth round. However, Barner fell until the sixth, and Carolina jumped at the opportunity to add another running back to their already crowded backfield.

Barner will see a familiar face in Carolina, as another former Oregon Duck, Jonathan Stewart is on the roster as well.

In addition to Barner going, former Oregon safety John Boyett was drafted number 192 overall by the Indianapolis Colts. The Napa, Calif. native missed a majority of his senior season following an injury, but prior to him missing time he was one of the top producers for Nick Aliotti’s defense.

After the draft drew to its conclusion on Saturday afternoon, several Ducks still did not know where the next chapter of their football career would take place.

However, later on Saturday evening the picture became much clearer for two former Oregon defensive standouts. Isaac Remington signed a free agent deal with the Philadelphia Eagles and will reunite with old coach Chip Kelly and Michael Clay will join Dion Jordan in Miami to play for the Dolphins.

Spring Game: Josh Huff leads crew of wideouts for Ducks

It’s no secret the Oregon offense is something to behold. During Chip Kelly’s four-year tenure in Eugene, the Ducks were regarded by many to have the best, most dynamic offense in all of collegiate football. They scored the most points, and not only that, they did it fast. Really fast.

As dominant and as explosive as the Ducks’ offense has been, for the past several years there has been one glaring absence. Since the departure of Jeff Maehl from the football program, Oregon has lacked a legitimate deep threat at the wide receiver position to open up the field.

While this lack of a deep threat has far from hindered the effectiveness of the Oregon offense, four BCS bowl appearances in four years is nothing to be ashamed about. The presence of a go-to receiver would pay sizable dividends for an offense run by a dual-threat quarterback such as Marcus Mariota.

This is not to say, however, that the answer to this quandary is not already present on the 2013 roster.

Even while missing two games during the 2012 campaign, Josh Huff led the team in receiving yards with 493, as well as touchdowns with seven.

Entering his senior season in Eugene, the one thing that has never come under scrutiny with Huff is his talent. He possesses all the physical attributes necessary to be a dominant receiver on the collegiate level, and come fall he should be a favorite target for Mariota and the fast-paced Oregon offense.

By all accounts, Huff has cleared up and matured from off-the-field issues he dealt with during the winter and has entered spring camp with a renewed sense of determination and discipline.

If Huff can not only fill the void of the deep-threat receiver that has been absent from the Oregon offense for several years as well as a leadership role on a relatively young team, the Duck offense has the potential to be that much more lethal.

To pair with Huff on the outside, Keanon Lowe and Bralon Addison are both expected to start come August 31 when the Ducks open against Nicholls State. Both Lowe and Addison tallied three touchdowns in their 2012 efforts and have showed glimpses of brilliance and the ability to be effective wide outs in the Oregon offensive scheme. However, this year much more will be expected from the young receivers, and it will be interesting to see how they both deal with the increased workload.

The real X factor in terms of the Oregon passing game is not even a receiver. It is tight end Colt Lyerla. In 2012, Lyerla had a breakout season, snagging 25 catches and finding the end zone a total of six times. Lyerla has all the physical attributes to be one of the nation’s top tight ends, and if he lives up to his potential, the Oregon pass game will be that much more dangerous.

While there is a sense of uncertainty about whether new coach Mark Helfrich will put the ball in the air more often than his predecessor Chip Kelly, one thing is certain. Helfrich definitely has the talent on the outside to successfully air the ball out if he so chooses in his maiden voyage as the Oregon head coach.

The Oregon football team completed its 15th and final spring practice on Wednesday morning at the Moshofsky Center. The Ducks will now wait until Saturday to strap on the pads and play in the annual spring game at Autzen Stadium.

While the game this year lacks some of the drama of last year’s game, the exhibition will still provide Duck fans a unique opportunity to see what the 2013 version of the Oregon football team under Mark Helfrich will look like.

The Register-Guard’s Rob Moseley provides a recap of the final practice and the scoring system for the spring game here.

Talented Liverpool forward Luis Suarez seemed to be on every major sports outlet on Sunday, but not for a good reason. During a match against Chelsea earlier in the day, Suarez took a bite out of defender Branislav Ivanovic in an attempt to gain position for a ball.

The international soccer community was outraged by Suarez’s antics and on Wednesday morning the England Football Association responded. The EFA decided that a 10-game ban for Suarez would be instituted, and since there are only four games left in the season, it appears as though his 2013 campaign is over.

The penalty for Suarez was extra harsh since this is not his first offense for biting the opposition. In 2010 he was banned for seven matches for biting an opponent when he was playing in the Dutch league.

The Golden State Warriors notched their first playoff win in six years on Tuesday night when they defeated the Denver Nuggets in Denver 131-117.

Many left the Warriors for dead in the best-of-seven series after they not only lost the opening game on the road to Denver on Sunday night, but also their all-star forward David Lee.

Lee suffered a torn right hip flexor and is done for the rest of the playoffs. To counteract this loss, head coach Mark Jackson went with an extremely small starting lineup and the gamble paid off.

Game three is Friday night in Oakland at 7:30 pm.

Ducks will continue military-themed spring game

The 2013 Oregon football season is sure to be filled with intrigue and surprise. Chip Kelly has left Eugene and is now the head man in Philadelphia, leaving full control of one of the nation’s top football programs in the hands of Mark Helfrich.

With Helfrich now in control, numerous questions have arisen in regards to his tenure as head coach. Will he throw more than Kelly did, will the day-to-day operation of the team be any different from it has in years past?

These are just two of the many uncertainties that are crossing Duck fans’ minds entering the spring game. However, one thing that will not change under coach Helfrich is the theme of the annual spring exhibition from Oregon.

For the fourth year in a row, the spring game will act as a platform to honor the men and women who serve in the United States military. The teams will wear special uniforms, designed specifically for the game that will, per usual, have a military theme to them.

Implemented under Chip Kelly during his time in Oregon, the military-themed spring game has been tremendously well received by the community, and apparently Helfrich has decided to make it a staple of his tenure as well.

As in the past, admission to the game is three nonperishable food items. The game kicks off at 11 a.m. Saturday at Autzen Stadium.

Man U clinches EPL. With the help of Robin van Persie’s three-goal game, Manchester United defeated Aston Villa 3-0 to clinch their 20th league title on Monday. George wins Most Improved. Paul George has had quite the season this year. Averaging over 17 points and six rebounds per game, the 6-foot-8 small forward from Fresno State won the NBA’s Most Improved Player in landslide fashion.

George has been a consistent player in his first several years in the association, but his 2012-13 effort apparently seemed to come out of nowhere. He really came into his own after the Pacers’ leader and arguably best player, Danny Granger, injured his knee and missed nearly all of the season.

In addition to winning Most Improved Player, George was also selected to his first All-Star Game this past season.
