Kill switch bill signed into law

Starting next summer, when a new smartphone gets lost or stolen, the owner will be able to render it unusable.

Gov. Mark Dayton signed a new law into effect Wednesday that requires a “kill switch” for all new smartphones and cell-connected tablets sold in the state after July 1, 2015. Minnesota is the first state in the country to pass this type of law.

The kill switch function would allow for the device to be remotely disabled and for its memory to be wiped if stolen or lost.

Nelson dismissed from Rutgers; second suspect arrested

Just after it began, Philip Nelson’s Rutgers career is officially over.

The Rutgers football team released Nelson, the once highly touted Gophers quarterback, on Tuesday, a day after he was charged with first- and third-degree assault.

According to a criminal complaint, Nelson kicked Kolstad, a former Minnesota State-Mankato linebacker, in the head during an altercation in Mankato, Minn., that took place Sunday morning. 

Rutgers head coach Kyle Flood announced the dismissal in a statement Tuesday.

Police investigating suspicious Cedar-Riverside death

Minneapolis police are investigating a suspicious death after finding a body blocks off the University of Minnesota's West Bank campus early Wednesday morning, according to a news release.

College of Biological Sciences announces interim dean

The University of Minnesota's College of Biological Sciences announced Wednesday that Thomas Hays will serve as its interim dean beginning July 1 until a permanent one is found, according to an email sent to CBS students, faculty and staff.

A search committee, composed mainly of University deans, faculty and students, will conduct a nationwide search for current CBS Dean Robert Elde's permanent replacement. Appointment of a new dean is expected by July 2015.

University software upgrade to facilitate preferred name changes

Mac Miller to headline Spring Jam

Mac Miller will headline the University of Minnesota's 2014 Spring Jam at Mariucci Arena on April 26.
 
Earl Sweatshirt, Mod Sun and the Spring Jam Battle of the Bands winner will be supporting acts at the headlining show.
 
Student Unions and Activities predicted that this year’s festival will be the biggest Spring Jam to date. To help pay for the higher-profile artist, the event will be ticketed. Student tickets are $20 for general seating and $25 for floor seating.

Kaler: U has ‘picked up the pace’

University of Minnesota President Eric Kaler outlined his plans to increase diversity, security and degree options at the institution on Thursday in his annual State of the University address.

Kaler also reviewed the University’s accomplishments from the last year, noting the two-year tuition freeze for resident undergraduates, a program to boost scientific research and his plan to significantly cut administrative costs in the next five years.

Students speak out for Northrop’s fees request

After Northrop Concerts and Lectures was offered only one-third of its $480,000 fees request in the Student Services Fees Committee's initial recommendations, students came out to a public hearing Friday to show their support for the group, which will sponsor programming at Northrop Auditorium when it opens in April.

Supporters have also collected more than 700 signatures on an online petition that says the group should receive its full fees request.
