Minneapolis finalizes police body camera policy

The Minneapolis Police Department released the final version of its body camera policy Wednesday through a special order from Chief Janee Harteau.

The policy outlines the instances when officers should record using the cameras, and was put into effect immediately.

Under the policy, officers would be required to manually turn on the cameras during situations like traffic stops, vehicle searches or chases, when there is a use of force or “any contact involving criminal activity.”

Shooting near campus will be investigated as a “bias motivated” crime

A shooting that injured two Muslim men early Wednesday morning in the Dinkytown area will be investigated as a possible “bias motivated crime,” according to the Minneapolis Police Department.

At about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, two victims were shot near the intersection of 14th Avenue Southeast and 6th Street Southeast, about one block from the University of Minnesota.

In the attack, an assailant allegedly made disparaging remarks about Muslims before firing at five men dressed in Islamic attire, according to a campus-wide public safety update issued Friday afternoon.

Prosecutors decline to press charges against wrestlers accused of selling Xanax

No charges will be filed against University of Minnesota wrestlers allegedly involved in the sale and use of Xanax — an anti-anxiety drug —  or against the team's head coach for allegedly attempting to quietly resolve the issue internally.  

Jean Heyer, a Hennepin County attorney’s office spokeswoman, confirmed prosecutors chose not to pursue criminal charges against Robinson or the wrestling team, but declined to comment further.

Two shot near campus early Wednesday

Two people were shot early Wednesday morning near the University of Minnesota, according to a campuswide Neighborhood Safety Notice issued Wednesday afternoon.

The two victims suffered non-life threatening injuries. They are not affiliated with the University, according to the school’s safety alert.

University names newest Regents professor

The University of Minnesota announced the selection of its newest Regents professor Wednesday.

Christopher Uggen, professor of sociology and law, was awarded with the school’s 100th Regents Professorship — the highest level of recognition given to faculty members by the University — for his achievements in criminology and law, adding to the list of awards and achievements he’s received.

A more than 24-hour sit-in by U.S. House Democrats on chamber floors ended Thursday.

The protest by Democratic legislators began around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday to demand votes on gun control measures in the wake of the recent mass shooting in Orlando, Florida.

Minnesota Reps. Keith Ellison, Rick Nolan and Betty McCollum, as well as Sens. Al Franken and Amy Klobuchar, helped hold the floor to encourage voting on gun control bills to strengthen background checks and prevent people on the government’s no-fly list from buying firearms.

Two University buildings burglarized

Two University of Minnesota buildings were burglarized early last Thursday by three suspects who were recorded on campus cameras.

The suspects allegedly broke into Pioneer Hall and the Education Sciences Building and stole various electronics, including some Apple iPads, said University of Minnesota Police Department deputy chief Chuck Miner,

He said it’s unclear how the suspects got into the buildings, but there were prior marks on the buildings.

UMPD shared video camera images of the suspects on Twitter and Facebook with little additional information.

Memorial held for UCLA shooter victim

A memorial was held in the University of Minnesota’s Mayo Auditorium on Friday for the friends and family of medical student Ashley Hasti, a victim of alleged UCLA shooter Mainak Sarkar.  

Hasti was found dead in a Brooklyn Park home on June 2 after her name appeared on the shooter’s “kill list” left in his St. Paul apartment.

About 50 subdued onlookers listened to colleagues, faculty members and relatives speak in remembrance of the 31-year-old.
