Ilhan Omar defeats longtime Rep. Phyllis Kahn in primary race

Ilhan Omar, a Somali-American political activist defeated one of the Minnesota’s longest-serving legislators in Tuesday’s DFL primary election, likely becoming the nation's first Somali-American lawmaker.

With the win, Omar has unseated Rep. Phyllis Kahn, who has represented House District 60B for 44 years. 

Akhilesh Menawat, deputy communication director for Omar’s campaign, said the most difficult part of her bid for office is over.

University student assaulted near campus

A University of Minnesota student was assaulted early Saturday morning in Stadium Village, according to a University Neighborhood Safety Notice sent Monday afternoon.

After approaching the student and making small talk with her at the Stadium Village light rail stop, the suspect followed her as she walked home, the campus-wide email said.

The Democratic National Convention wrapped up Thursday after Hillary Clinton — the country’s first woman nominee for president — delivered her speech and accepted the party’s nomination.

The convention’s speakers, which comprised public figures like Rev. Jesse Jackson and actress Meryl Streep, also included a number of Minnesota politicians who offered endorsements and praise to Clinton and encouraged party unification to defeat Republican Party nominee Donald Trump.

Attorney chosen as chair of U’s Alumni Association board

The University of Minnesota Alumni Association — a body that advocates for the University with the support of graduates —elected a new chair to its Board of Directors.

Daniel McDonald, a partner at the intellectual property law firm Merchant & Gould, assumed his new role on July 1, becoming the 80th Alumni Association chair in the organization’s 112-year history.

McDonald received an electrical engineering degree from the University in 1982 and a law degree from the Law School in 1985.

Philando Castile funeral draws thousands in St. Paul

The crowd's chant — “United for Philando” — reverberated as pallbearers lifted Philando Castile’s casket onto a horse-drawn carriage Thursday.

The cathedral, which typically seats 3,000, filled quickly — the overcast, rainy day did little to deter the nearly 2,000 attendees from pouring in. By the time the service started, pews were full, with many forced to stand.
