Suspect charged with felony assault, felony vandalism

Following two aggravated assaults, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office charged a suspect with felony vandalism and felony assault with a deadly weapon Tuesday.
The suspect is Hugo Alcala, identified as a 34-year-old male from Concord, California, with no affiliation to UC Berkeley, according to a UCPD community advisory sent Friday.
At 1:47 p.m. Saturday, UCPD responded to a report of two victims attacked by a suspect armed with a tire iron in the area of the Lawrence Hall of Science parking lot No. 3, according to the advisory. Upon arriving at the scene, UCPD located the two 19-year-old victims — who are not affiliated with campus — near a parked vehicle with several smashed windows.
The victims reported that they were attacked in an unprovoked assault, and one of them was medically treated for facial injuries and lacerations to his hands, according to the advisory. The suspect fled prior to the UCPD officers’ arrival on scene.
Later that evening, the suspect was arrested in Oakland, and follow-up investigation provided evidence that linked the suspect to the assault, the advisory adds.
