The Daily Californian launches weekly speaker series
Starting June 28, The Daily Californian will go live at 6 p.m. every Sunday on Crowdcast and Facebook Live. Each week, Daily Cal Live will feature exciting conversations between Daily Cal alumni and notable local and national figures. Tune in to connect while distanced and be entertained!
These broadcasts are free for the public to enjoy, but we hope you will be inspired to donate and help keep the Daily Cal going for another 150 years. Like many other media organizations, our ad revenue has taken a serious hit due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Funds raised from this series will help support our operations, meaning we can continue providing coverage to our community and a training ground for student journalists. Donations will also go toward scholarships to support low-income staffers, which is critical to creating an equitable newsroom.
Our first broadcast will feature a conversation between Kurt Streeter and Michael Silver. Before Silver was a sports writer and NFL Network television analyst, he wrote for the Daily Cal. Before Streeter was a New York Times reporter, he played for the Cal men’s tennis team — and was interviewed by Silver in 1987. As our sports editor at the time, Silver got Streeter interested in journalism!
The article featuring Silver’s interview of Streeter can be found in our digitized print archives and we’ve posted it on the Daily Cal website. Unfortunately, the topics explored in the interview are still relevant decades later. Watch our first broadcast, “Shut Up and Dribble?! Sports in an Age of Racial Reckoning,” to hear them discuss the intersection of race and sports.
The lineup for the second broadcast on July 5 will take us behind all the coronavirus headlines when Daily Cal alumna and San Francisco Chronicle health writer Erin Allday has a discussion with Dr. George Rutherford, a UCSF epidemiologist. We hope to see you every Sunday!
