Italy’s far-right leader to face trial 

Italy’s former interior minister, Matteo Salvini, is accused of illegally keeping migrants at sea on a boat off Sicily for days in August 2019. Italy’s senate has voted to allow prosecutors to put Salvini on trial and for the trial to go ahead.

Puerto Rico’s government loses $2.6 million in phishing scam 

Puerto Rico’s government lost more than $2.6 million after falling for an email phishing scam, according to a senior official. The government agency transferred money after an email alleged a change in a baking account tied to remittance payments. It’s unclear whether officials have been able to recover any of the money.

Turkey says Syria will pay ‘heavy price’ for attacks 

Turkey’s president has warned the Syrian government that it will pay a “very, very heavy price” for attacks on Turkish soldiers in north-west Syria. Five troops were killed in opposition-held Idlib province. Syrian soldiers have come close to regaining full control of the country’s main north-south highway.

First foreign-language film wins best picture Academy Award 

“Parasite” a South Korean film won best picture at the 92 Academy Awards, making it the first foreign-language film to ever win the award. The film is the first South Korean film to ever be nominated for an Oscar.

Sharp increase in coronavirus deaths and cases 

There has been an increase in number of cases of people with coronavirus- with 14,840 people diagnosed with the virus. Some 242 deaths have been recorded in Hubei in China.

Leaders of Somalia and Somaliland meet for first time 

The current leaders of Somalia and the breakaway territory of Somaliland have met for the first time on  

Feb. 11. The leaders met in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital, and was brokered by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. This is the first meeting since Somali President Mohamed Adbdullahi Mohamed and Somaliland leader Muse Bihi Abdi took office in 2017.
