The Harris County-Houston Sports Authority officially announced on Thursday that the University’s TDECU Stadium will host the inaugural XFL championship game on April 26, which was first reported by the Houston Chronicle.

“We are honored to partner with the XFL, the City of Houston and the Harris County – Houston Sports Authority to host the inaugural XFL Championship,” UH Vice President for Athletics Chris Pezman said. “We are excited to have the opportunity to showcase our university and world-class facilities to the nation.”

XFL Commissioner and CEO Oliver Luck made the official announcement.

“Houston is a great all-around sports town with top-notch facilities, an amazing community of football fans and a solid infrastructure,” Luck said. “We are grateful to the city and the Sports Authority for opening its doors once again to the XFL.”

TDECU Stadium is the host to Houston’s XFL team, the Roughnecks, who played their first game last Saturday at the University.

The 42,000 seat stadium was chosen over other cities in the league, which include NFL stadiums like Seattle’s CenturyLink Field and East Rutherford, New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, which both have a holding capacity of over 70,000.

The Roughnecks’ next game at TDECU Stadium will be on Sunday against the St. Louis BattleHawks.
