Bears hire Bill Musgrave as offensive coordinator
Cal head coach Justin Wilcox announced Friday that former Broncos offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave has been hired to become the Bears’ next offensive coordinator to replace Beau Baldwin. Baldwin left the program to become the next head coach of the Cal Poly Mustangs.
An NFL journeyman, Musgrave has worked as either a QB coach or offensive coordinator for nine different professional organizations, including the Oakland Raiders, Minnesota Vikings, Atlanta Falcons and Jacksonville Jaguars. This upcoming 2020 season will mark the first time Musgrave has returned to the collegiate level since his 2001-2002 stint as Virginia’s offensive coordinator. Musgrave also had his own successful college career, where he was a first-team all-conference quarterback for Oregon.
Cal’s offense had an abysmal 2019-2020 season, finishing dead last in the Pac-12 in passing yards per game and yards per game total. Musgrave specializes in quarterback development, and will likely work closely with the Bears’ emerging star quarterback, redshirt sophomore Chase Garbers, to improve Cal’s offensive efficiency and pass attack.
“Bill Musgrave has a brilliant offensive mind and is one of the top teachers of offensive football and quarterbacks. Bill has incredible football knowledge and has been extremely versatile in the offensive systems he has run throughout his career, which is important,” Wilcox said in a press release. “He also has a strong desire to coach again at the collegiate level, where he can help develop young football players at a formative stage of their careers. His competitiveness and humility stood out during the hiring process. Everyone that I talked to about Bill that I know and trust had tremendous things to say. He will be a great fit at Cal.”
