Bears going pro? Drake Callender traded to Miami, Simon Lekressner visits showcase

Cal goalie Drake Callender may be off to new MLS franchise Inter Miami CF after the San Jose Earthquakes traded his homegrown player rights for a second-round pick in the upcoming MLS SuperDraft.

Callender has been a mainstay in front of the Cal goal for several seasons now, and was named to the All-Pac-12 Second Team for the second consecutive season this fall. Widely touted as one of the best goalkeepers in the conference and the country, Callender made 52 saves this season and allowed 18 goals in 17 appearances this season.

“We are pleased to trade for his Homegrown Rights and will explore him coming to South Florida sometime in the future,” Inter Miami sporting director Paul McDonough said in a club statement.

Though it is yet to be seen how Miami will build out their roster, Callender could find a place on it if the new club needs options in goal.

Simon Lekressner is another Bear who could transition to the next level. After a banner season in which Lekressner made the All-Pac-12 first team and recorded five goals and two assists, the senior travelled to the Adidas College Showcase, a tryout where MLS staff can scout college talent.

The MLS SuperDraft will begin Jan. 9.
