The women’s rugby team defeated K-State in a game on Saturday, Nov. 9 (29-5).  

Women’s rugby president and sophomore in biology Mauresa Caire was really proud of the team.  

“So, we ended up winning 29-5 and I think we did really well actually,” Caire said. “Compared to last year.., the first time we played them they beat us (by) like 40 something. So, this game, especially having a lot of new members, we came back and we had really great defense. In fact, we held them within the same like ten meters for 20 minutes. So, I think we did really well overall.”  

There is always room for improvement and Caire saw a couple of things during the game that the team needs to improve before the head into their next round of games in the spring semester.   

“I think… we should definitely work on attacking and being on top of the ball a little bit more,” Caire said. “I think we could have… scored more had we been a little bit more active on offense.”  

The women’s rugby club has had several cancelled games over the course of this season. This has been challenging for the members of the team as there are many new members who have no experience in rugby and weren’t able to get a lot of playing time during the season. Despite this, Caire was pleased to see the girls continue to work on improving and getting better at every practice and at every game.  

“I think we’ve improved substantially because well one we’ve only played three games this semester, so we really haven’t had much time to improve or have a lot of experience,” Caire said. “… So, especially coming out and beating K-State, I think we did really well for not having (the most) experience players on the field.”  

The game against K-State on Saturday was the women’s rugby club’s last game of the fall semester. Looking ahead, the Gorillas are 2-0 in their conference and will make a play for nationals next semester.  
“So, right now we’re two and (zero) in our conference and so I think what we’re most looking forward to is potentially taking first in our conference and then going to nationals this next spring semester,” Caire said. “… We also plan on going to a tournament in New Orleans, I think, in February that we are trying to raise money for.”

“… We’ll be looking for more players to recruit for next semester,” Caire said. “We’re always looking for more players.”
