Cal men’s basketball alumnus Ryan Anderson was waived by the Miami Heat on Saturday, as first reported by The Sun-Sentinel’s Ira Winderman.

By waiving Anderson prior to July 10, the Heat will only pay him the partially guaranteed $15.6 million of his $21.3 million contract. Anderson agreed to reduce the guaranteed amount when he was traded from the Houston Rockets to Phoenix Suns in August 2018.

Miami will also stretch Anderson’s salary in order to complete its trade for star Jimmy Butler and will have $5.2 million cap hits in the respective 2020 and 2021 offseasons.

Anderson played sparingly this past season in Phoenix and Miami, logging 12.9 minutes per game in 25 games and averaging 2.5 points and 2.2 rebounds in the little time he saw the hardwood.

Prior to the 2018-19 season, Anderson, along with De’Anthony Melton, was dealt from Houston to Phoenix in exchange for Marquese Chriss and Brandon Knight.

Anderson began the season as a starter for Phoenix, starting 8 of the team’s first 10 games, but fell out of the rotation and was dealt to Miami in for Tyler Johnson and Wayne Ellington. The change of scenery did not come with more playing time as Anderson sat on the bench for much of his tenure in South Beach, totaling only 44 minutes for the Heat across 10 games.

As an unrestricted free agent, Anderson will now have the opportunity to sign with the team of his choosing.
