Softball team plays doubleheader

The Pittsburg Gorillas fell short on their double header games on Friday March 1 to Fort Hayes. The first game ended 5-4 and later the second game that day 6-0. The softball team has plans to take earn their next game’s wins.

Coach Balazs took note on ways to better her team’s effectiveness for the next time around.

“We came up a little short, feel like we didn’t do a good job on attacking pitches..,” Balazs said. “… Didn’t take advantage of some situations with runners… We left too many balls over the plates they were able to hit hard, a lot of singles that we gave up, defensively we had a couple miscues here and there. We made some very, very good plays especially in that second game… defensively happy with what we did.

They have a goal and plan to correct the few missed opportunities that they missed to secure victories entering their conference games, according to Balazs.

“We need to do a little bit better on offense, make a little adjustment on the mound and then we’ll be okay,” Balazs said.

Gorillas, according to Balazs, that kept fighting no matter the outcome are always ones to be feared. They gave 110% to push through for the best outcome they can grab onto.

“Sierra (Thompson) had a pretty good four innings for us, until that last inning she had some trouble,” Balazs said. Happy with how she started, just couldn’t get out of that inning. Offensively, Mikayla Mahlo did a pretty good job fighting her way on base and gave us a lot of opportunities to score, stole some bases big, did a good job there…and made a nice play for us there in left field.

The softball team has high hopes to enter their conference games on a solid note.

(Our goal) is to open off the MIAA game, so they’re huge games for us so we definitely need to start conference play on a good note,” Balazs said. “We’re very capable of doing a lot of things well against Missouri Southern. I’ve been watching a lot of film on them this week and putting together a good game plan for us. And on the mound and in the box and hooping that we can get started on the right foot… We still have a lot of ball left ahead of us and our softball is a game that it doesn’t always love you back at times and that’s kind of what we saw on Friday, but we just need to stay positive, keep staying on course with the games ahead of us, and know we are going to start turning around and start being more consistent in games.”

Catch the Softball team’s next game against Missouri Southern Friday March 8 in Joplin, Missouri.
