Volleyball: Utes Go 0-2 in California Weekend

 

The Utes traveled to California this weekend for matches against the California Golden Bears and No. 2 Stanford. The Utes started off the weekend against the Cal Bears with a heartbreaking match, falling 3-1, and ended the weekend with a 3-0 loss against No. 2 Stanford.

The Utes had some leaders step up on the court during the game Friday night. That included outside hitters Dani Drews, Kenzie Koerber, Megan Yett and setter Bailey Choy.

However, the Utes still dropped the match in four sets of play.  

After the Bears took the first set 25-21, the Utes turned around in the second by taking a 10-2 run to grab a 20-14 lead. Cal went on a small run later in the set but could not recover, and the Utes took the second set with a score of 25-18.

In the third set, Utah started off leading 17-12. The Bears had a long run later and caught up to the Utes, tying it up at 20. After another tie at 22, the Bears ended up overtaking the Utes and finished off the third set at 25-23.

The Bears kept their momentum going from the third set and finished off the match quickly in the fourth, taking the Utes 25-17.

Drews has been performing well all around the court so far this season, and she finished the match with her 12th double-double of the season with 21 kills and 13 digs.

Koerber finished off the match leading the team in blocks at 5.0. Koerber was second on the team in kills with 11.

Yett has been performing well all around the court as well and finished off the match with 10 kills, only one hitting error and 13 digs.

Outside hitters Drews, Koerber and Yett finished off the match with a total of 42 kills and only nine errors.

Choy completed the match on Friday with her 12th double-double of the season, tallying 33 assists and 15 digs.

The Utes finished off the weekend on Sunday, Nov. 4 with another loss against No. 2 Stanford in three straight sets.

The first set started off tight from the start, but the Cardinal got an 8-0 run that Utah could not recover from. Stanford took the set at 25-17.

In the second set, the Utes got within one at 11-10, but Stanford did not allow Utah to pass them and took another run to take the lead at 16-10 and eventually finished off the set at 25-19.

Stanford finished off the match quickly in the third taking the set at 25-18, completing their 20th straight win.

The Utes will return home this weekend for matches up against Arizona on Friday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. and Arizona State on Sunday, Nov. 11.
