A fire broke out at Berkeley High School, or BHS, Thursday afternoon, prompting an all-school evacuation, according to an email from BHS principal Erin Schweng.

The trash can fire started in the mens’ restroom on the first floor of the G Building and was extinguished by a staff member “fairly quickly,” according to Schweng. Berkeley Fire Department spokesperson Keith May said in an email that the fire had already been extinguished by the time BFD arrived on scene at approximately 1:32 p.m.

Nobody was injured by the fire, and the cause of the fire is still unknown, according to May.

Schweng added in her email that the entire school was evacuated for 20 to 30 minutes at about 1:15 p.m. Classes resumed later Thursday afternoon, once the fire had been extinguished.

“It took some time for the fire department to blow the smoke out of the hallway so that classes could re-enter,” Schweng said in her email.
