Men’s Soccer Aims Towards National Tournament

Ryan Parry

The Florida Southern men’s soccer team finished the regular season 12-4 and is now poised to start postseason play against Lynn University on Monday, Oct. 29.

A major part of the team’s success this season has come from the defensive end of the field. The Mocs finished the regular season with 0.93 goals allowed per game (GAA) and 10 shutouts.

A strong part of the Moccasin defense is Junior Foster Appiah.

“In the beginning of the season I saw that I had good teammates around me and that makes you play harder,” Appiah said. “I also saw unity in the team.”

The Mocs have big postseason aspirations as they previously Lynn University earlier in the season and won 2-1.

Another important member of the team is sophomore James Meehan. Meehan played a large part of the Moccasin offense this season especially after teammate and follow striker Jacob Ling Vannerus tore his ACL and was out for the season.

Meehan has played in all 16 games this season while starting 12 of those games. He scored nine goals and had two assists.

The Sunshine State Conference is one of the toughest conferences in Division II. The National Champion has come out of our conference 3 times in the last 5 seasons.

“I feel like we can win nationals once we leave our region. With how competitive our conference is I feel like it prepares us with national level play” said Meehan on his expectations for the postseason.
