‘Tis the season, Bears, because believe it or not, the time has come to start spreading the summer-of-2019 internship cheer. If next summer seems too distant to motivate you, allow us to give you a closer date: Oct. 8, or National Kick Butt Day.” While some of you may have already started the process of applying (you overachievers, you!), we here at the Clog wanted to help give the rest of you a jumpstart on finding your perfect summer internship on this national holiday. Here are a few tips and tricks to get you ready to kick butt on some internship applications.

Get your ducks in a row

Do you ever feel like you have so much to do that the only reasonable answer is to instead do none of it and binge-watch “Halloweentown” instead? Well, fear not, because we here at the Clog have the perfect place for you to start: LinkedIn. Instead of thinking of it as a looming to-do, just think of it as a professional Facebook. Put your millennial (or Gen Z) hat on and do what you do best. Update your cover photo, spice up your resume and connect with some Cal alumni in fields you’re interested in. Before you know it, you’ll be feeling like a LinkedIn ~boss~ who’s ready to conquer the bigger and badder monsters of the internship search.

Join Handshake

Handshake is the Costco of grocery stores — the mothership of internship hunting. But instead of a Costco card, all you need is your Cal Net ID to login in a snap. Then, browse internship opportunities in bulk or customize the results to fit your time frame and field(s) of interest. And the fun doesn’t stop there! You can even use Handshake to sign up for workshops and on-campus recruiting programs if you’re feeling extra motivated.

Pencil it in

Get your planners out and mark those deadlines, because in the wise words of Michael Scott (or more accurately Wayne Gretzky) “You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take.” As you begin your research and start to come across deadlines and dates, grab a red sharpie and go to town on your calendar. Get busy, Bears!

Take a visit to the career counselor

If you need a bigger dose of inspiration, it’s time to see a professional. Make an online appointment with a UC Berkeley career counselor and then take a stroll (or an Uber) down to the Career Center, which is located in the same building as Tang. These mentors not only give you leads for internships that you’re qualified for, but also guide you in the process, making it the perfect place for internship-scouting novices to begin.

Now that you’re armed and ready, it’s time to jump on those internships before the ~trees~ over there do. In true Berkeley style, let’s kick some butt this National Kick Butt Day!
