Bruce scores game-winner; Niners win – Charlotte beats South Carolina in overtime

The Charlotte 49ers would get the win in double overtime against the South Carolina Gamecocks thanks to forward Daniel Bruce, who scored in the 108th minute to lift his side past the Conference USA opponent.

Charlotte started the match with four corners in the first 15 minutes, but could not find the back of the net. South Carolina’s Bjorn Gudjonsson had a chance to score in the 33rd minute, but his shot was redirected by Charlotte goalkeeper Elliot Panicco. The Gamecocks had most of the opportunities in the first half, having five shots to Charlotte’s two.

Both teams still couldn’t manage to find the back of the net in the second half. Charlotte forward Maclean Holbrook had a close header in the 54th minute but his effort was kept out of the goal.

In the 108th minute, the Niners would finally make their statement. Defender Delasi Batse would send a cross right to Daniel Bruce, who then took the opportunity and fired a shot past South Carolina goalkeeper Justin Bauer. With the goal, Bruce now has a total of six career game-winning goals.

With the shutout, the 49er defense recorded there third straight shutout as well as their sixth shutout of the season. The Niners had a 10-5 shot advantage against the Gamecocks. Charlotte had six corners in the night and South Carolina did not have any.

Charlotte will take their winning streak on the road Wednesday, Oct. 10 when they take on the Radford Highlanders at 7 p.m.
