Emani Towns was charged with two counts of felony for robbery and burglary in Berkeley on Aug. 17, according to UCPD spokesperson Sgt. Nicolas Hernandez.

Hernandez said that after the suspect allegedly entered the Unit 2 Residence Halls and stole a wallet, an off-duty UCPD officer driving their personal vehicle noticed the victim chasing the suspect down the street, along with other people trying to stop the suspect.

Witnessing the chase, the off-duty officer recognized that a crime was occurring and joined the chase, out of uniform, according to Hernandez. Another off-duty officer driving by the area in his personal vehicle joined the chase soon after when he noticed his colleague struggling with the suspect, Hernandez said.

“These officers were not on the clock — they were going home, and yet they still reacted,” Hernandez said. “They go above and beyond.”

One of the UCPD officers detained the suspect after chasing him on foot, Hernandez said, and held the suspect in place until uniformed UCPD officers arrived to assist with the arrest.

Towns was arrested on the 2500 block of Haste Street on charges of strong arm robbery, burglary and resisting arrest, according to UCPD crime logs. The stolen wallet was recovered and returned to the owner, Hernandez said. Towns is pleading not guilty to the charges, according to Alameda County Superior Court files.
