Animal rights activists protest Amazon, sale of animal products
On Sunday, activists displayed images of animal cruelty occurring at local farms in protest of Amazon selling animal products, just feet away from the Amazon store on Sproul Plaza.
The protest, organized by animal rights network Direct Action Everywhere, or DxE, was held by a group of about 15 activists. DxE organizer Lewis Bernier said the protest was a response to Amazon selling products that perpetuate animal abuse.
“We’re out here today to bring attention to the way Amazon uses and abuses animals, and the ways it is complicit in animal cruelty,” Bernier said.
DxE organizer Kitty Jones added that such Amazon products include cockfighting products and eggs that come from farms that do not treat their animals humanely. Jones said DxE has recently shifted its campaign against Whole Foods Market to focus on Amazon, since Amazon bought Whole Foods Market last year.
A representative from Amazon could not be reached for comment as of press time.
The protest was scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., according to a press release. The protesters said they will reconvene Monday and Wednesday to continue their activism.
