Gregory Richard Polk III, 19, has been arrested for attempted murder after driving his car, with his girlfriend inside, into the water at the Berkeley Marina Sunday evening.

According to Berkeley Police Department’s spokesperson Officer Byron White, emergency personnel responded to the reports from the marina at approximately 7:00 pm. By the time the officers arrived at the scene, they learned that a few good Samaritans had already rescued the two occupants from the sinking vehicle with their boat.

Polk, who was driving, was also arrested on suspicion of felony domestic violence and felony battery — after punching one of the good Samaritans who rescued him, White said.

White also said Polk “intentionally drove his vehicle into the water after a domestic dispute with his girlfriend,” which was revealed upon further investigation of the incident.

Polk is being held at the Berkeley Jail with a bail of $100,000. His arraignment is scheduled for Wednesday.
