Longhorns finish weekend of conference play undefeated

No. 6 Texas started its weekend of matches in Fort Worth on Friday against Big 12 foe TCU.

After starting the match outdoors, poor weather conditions forced a move to an indoor facility. The Longhorns were unfazed and ready to move onto their second match of the weekend. After finishing the doubles session with a win, the Longhorns dominated the unranked Horned Frogs in the singles session, finishing the match 4-0.

“A 35-minute lightning delay followed by a rain delay and then a move indoors at the critical moment of the doubles unquestionably made for a late and interesting evening,” Texas head coach Howard Joffe said. “We will need to play better tennis moving forward, but the Longhorns did display some psychological mettle.”

Texas continued play on Sunday in Lubbock against No. 15 Texas Tech (16–4, 6–0 Big 12), who looked to derail the Longhorns from securing their 11th straight win. A loss at the doubles point put the Longhorns down 1-0 early, forcing Texas to rely on the play of its singles session. The first match ended with No. 67 sophomore Petra Granic tying the match at 1-1.

From there, after a singles loss,  the Longhorns won two consecutive singles matches through the play of star twin duo sophomores, No. 1 Bianca Turati and No. 28 Anna Turati.

The final point to seal the victory and maintain the Longhorns’ undefeated conference record came from freshman Marta Perez-Mur, who defeated her opponent after three incredibly competitive sets.

After winning 11-straight matches, Texas now sits at 16-4 on the year and 6-0 in the Big 12.
