Ducks hold physical practice as UC Davis looms

Monday’s practice was cut short with Tuesday’s in mind. Head coach Mark Helfrich stated that today would be the most physical practice of camp with one-on-one special teams and a variety of other drills.

“It was physical, and a bunch of competitive situations in every phase,” Helfrich said after practice. “You do not get a lot of opportunities to practice one-on-one in special teams really at all.”

The offense and defense held various drills including one-on-one, seven-on-seven and some clock management drills.

One drill in particular featured the offense holding an extended drive while the defense attempted to stop it. With each drive a fresh offensive or defensive unit would rotate in.

The offense won the day. They got out to an early lead and were able to hold on throughout the course of the drills.

“It was definitely one of our best days of camp as an offense,” Dakota Prukop told reporters after practice. “It always seems to come down to the wire at the every end, but we had a fourth and one conversion with the offensive line and Kani [Benoit] so it was a good day.”

Hefrich emphasized that the team competed well today, and that a lot of young guys will be working to find their place on special teams.

He was not ready to announce a starting quarterback yet, but the depth chart will be released within the next couple of days.

“We’ll move towards UC Davis after that final scrimmage and have all of those discussions at every position,”Helfrich said. “It is a great situation [at quarterback] and at linebacker, wide receiver and a couple other spots where there is legitimate competition.”

Helfrich went on to state that linebacker will be the hardest position to set in the depth chart given the collection of various athletes.

After a trip to Rio de Janeiro for the Olympics, Devon Allen should be arriving at camp soon, and it is to be determined how much he’ll be used in the first game.
