Carol Christ will become the interim executive vice chancellor and provost May 1, announced Chancellor Nicholas Dirks in a campuswide email Tuesday.

Christ, director of the campus Center for Studies in Higher Education, will replace former executive vice chancellor and provost Claude Steele, who resigned from his position April 15, citing his wife’s health. His resignation came after criticism from students and faculty for his handling of sexual misconduct cases on campus.

From 1994 to 2000, Christ served as executive vice chancellor and provost at UC Berkeley, but she returned to teaching full-time in 2000. She became president of Smith College in 2002. In 2015, she returned to UC Berkeley to become the director of the campus Center for Studies in Higher Education.

“I am honored to serve the campus again in the capacity of executive vice chancellor and provost,” Christ said in a statement. “I love Berkeley, and am ready to do whatever I can at this crucial moment in the university’s life.”

Campus spokesperson Dan Mogulof said the decision process involved “broad consultation and engagement with people across the campus,” including vice chancellors, deans and members of faculty.
