Even before Oregon’s 4-2 loss to No. 15 Baylor, women’s tennis head coach Alison Silverio knew the Bears would pose a challenge.
The weekend before, Silverio called Baylor “a very talented team,” adding “they compete extremely hard, they’re coached extremely well.”
That stellar coaching showed for Baylor in Waco on Friday, and the loss evened Oregon’s season record 2-2. The loss also broke Oregon’s short-lived winning streak that began two weeks ago with an upset of Virgina Tech.
Baylor earned the doubles point on court No. 3, then No. 2 to take an early lead, 1-0.
Baylor extended that lead to 2-0 with a singles victory over Christi Woodson. Freshman standout Shweta Sangwan put Oregon on the board with a 6-1, 6-3 win on court No. 3.
The Ducks dropped another singles set on court No. 1 when Nia Rose was defeated, but Marlou Kluiving picked up the slack with a tie-breaking win to leave the score 3-2 Baylor.
With each point earned by the Ducks, pressure mounted on the remaining courts to secure a singles victory and get Oregon to the four point mark.
The match came down to the only singles matches left in play. Alyssa Tobita and Daniela Nasser each battled to give Oregon a chance at the comeback, but it Nasser fell on court No. 6.
After a defeat in the first set, Nasser fought back and finished set two 6-7, which led to the tie-breaker that she lost 7-4.
The loss gave Baylor the wining point and the Ducks a 4-2 loss.
Oregon will stay in Texas until Sunday when it takes on No. 44 Houston at 10 a.m.
