Congressman John Lewis to Speak at U About Civil Rights

U.S. Rep. John Lewis (D-Georgia) will speak at the U about his early life and involvement in civil rights activism on Nov. 10.

Lewis is known for his “prominent role” in the Freedom Riders movement, where activists staged protests on segregated buses, said Mark Matheson, director of the MUSE (My U Signature Experience) Project, who’s organizing the event.

“His history is profoundly rich,” Matheson said.

Lewis documents this history in his graphic novel series March, a set of three books written in collaboration with Andrew Aydin and illustrated by Nate Powell. Aydin and Powell will also make an appearance at the November event, and along with Lewis, will sign books after the keynote speech.

Matheson said the MUSE Project has prepared for this event for six months; the project’s theme this year is community.

“Lewis really steps out of history, and I really think people will be inspired after hearing him speak,” he said.

Tickets may still be available at the Kingsbury Hall box office. The event will be held at Libby Gardner Hall on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 11 a.m.
