With less than two weeks between Oregon football and its season opener against FCS opponent Eastern Washington, fall camp is quickly coming to a close.
Offensive coordinator Scott Frost shared his thoughts for the final week of training camp with the media Monday afternoon.
Do you think you’ll have enough separation to name a starting quarterback by then (six days before the season opener)?
We haven’t really even discussed it yet as far as quarterbacks go. Both guys that are competing are doing a great job and we got some guys beside them that are doing a great job. I’m impressed with their improvement. I think everyone knows what they’re doing. We’ve done a great job around here of taking the care of the ball, too. That’s one thing I really want to see these guys do.
What are the things in a scrimmage, before you make your decisions on redshirts and depth charts, that you want to see that will help you in that regard?
We’ll have a meeting here in the next week of which guys can help us this year and which ones we’re going to redshirt. Sometimes, there are guys that can help us that still redshirt. Kind of depends on need at the position and just the guy’s readiness. But we got a bunch of good young players, so if there are ones that can play a significant role, we’ll play them. Otherwise, it’s going to be great to save them.
What are the biggest concerns or things you want to work out in the last week of camp?
We’re just getting through our installations, honestly. Pretty much the whole playbook is in now. Now, we just got to detail things and dial in on what we’re doing. Then, it will get a lot easier come game week because we’ll pair it even more down for individual game plan.
Dwayne Stanford said this is the best he’s felt in four camps. Have you noticed a difference in him even from last year when he really came through for you guys?
Yeah, I think our receiver group is really strong. Dwayne being one of them. He looks faster to me this year. He knows exactly what he’s doing at every position, so he’s one of many guys who is going to give us a lot of playmakers and depth on the outside.
When do you guys start looking at film for week one?
We try to stay ahead. We’ve looked at all our opponents already in the offseason. We won’t probably start game planning until the end of this week. It’s even tougher game one. You’re playing an opponent you haven’t played in Eastern Washington, who has been a really good team. They have a new defensive coordinator, so there’s not going to be a lot of film to watch. But we’ll try to get the best idea of what we can of what they’re doing and try to come up with something from there.
