Jamabo faces potential imprisonment after arrest for police evasion

UCLA football coach Jim Mora declined to comment on the status of class of 2015 recruit Sotonye “Soso” Jamabo when asked about the Plano West High School senior Monday.

“At this time I can’t expand further on the comment (UCLA Athletics) already made (Sunday),” Mora said to reporters following Monday’s workout. “It wouldn’t be fair for me to do so. I just don’t know enough.”

Spokesman Josh Rupprecht said in a statement Sunday that UCLA was “obviously concerned” about reports surrounding the star running back, but declined to expand further until more information becomes available.

Jamabo was arrested Saturday night by Kemp police officers and was booked into Kaufman County Jail just before 1:30 a.m. local time Sunday for evading arrest with a vehicle. He posted $7,500 bond Sunday afternoon and has not yet been assigned a court date, according to a spokeswoman from the Kaufman County District Attorney’s office. If convicted, he could face between six months and two years in prison.

Police said Jamabo and three passengers were seen swerving on State Highway 274 and speeding to pass other cars in a turning lane around 7:20 p.m. local time Saturday. Jamabo and the three passengers also began throwing objects out of the windows of a Ford pickup truck before they were stopped and detained by officers, said Kemp Chief of Police Robert D. Walker in a statement Sunday.

Jamabo is ranked ESPN’s No. 4 running back recruit in the class of 2015. He signed his National Letter of Intent with UCLA on Feb. 4.
