Eugene to host 2021 Track and Field World Championships

For the first time, the United States will host the 2021 IAAF Track and Field Outdoor World Championships after Eugene was chosen as the host city during a special vote Thursday in Beijing.

This story was first reported on by The Oregonian.

The 27-member IAAF Council awarded the city the championships, which will be held within Oregon’s Historic Hayward Field.

The World Championships are a nine-day competition that brings together the best track and field athletes in the world. It is set to be the largest sporting event in 2021, with around 213 different countries sending athletes to compete.

The news comes as somewhat of a surprise after Eugene missed out on the 2019 IAAF World Championships last November, watching as it was awarded to Doha, Qatar instead in a close vote.

Last Summer, Eugene hosted the World Junior Championships.
