San Leandro man arraigned for allegedly murdering Berkeley resident last year

Krishna Ferreira of San Leandro, a 24-year-old, was arraigned in court Tuesday for allegedly murdering Berkeley resident Dustin Bynum in a fatal shooting on San Pablo Avenue in August last year.

Berkeley Police Department patrol officers arrived near San Pablo Avenue and Delaware Street on the evening of Aug. 1 in response to multiple reports of shots fired and a victim down. Bynum, 24, was discovered with gunshot wounds and was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Ferreira was found and arrested by Berkeley police Sept. 11 in San Leandro and has been held in custody at Santa Rita Jail since the time of his arrest.

Alex Diaz also appeared in court Tuesday for arraignment as an alleged accessory to the murder. Diaz allegedly helped Ferreira to escape the scene of the shooting.

Ferreira’s murder charge includes clauses for violent felony, intentional discharge of a firearm and association with a criminal street gang. If found guilty, the gang clause stipulates that he may be imprisoned for life in a state facility. Ferreira had previously been convicted of second-degree robbery, according to court documents.

The two defendants will appear at the Rene C. Davidson Courthouse on Dec. 19 to enter pleas. Diaz will also undergo proceedings for appointment of counsel as his case is being transferred to the public defender’s office.
