Emerald Quick Hits: What happened to Oregon football?

An unranked Arizona squad (that will soon change as the Wildcats now find themselves with a 5-0 record) was able to defeat Oregon 31-24 thanks to a porous Duck offensive line and a weak attempt on defense.

-At the conclusion of the game, a lot of fans and media pointed to the questionable calls from the officials as the source of the upset. The most egregious was the dubious unsportsmanlike conduct enforced on Oregon’s Tony Washington after he brought down the quarterback to potentially force a field goal attempt. Grantland’s Andrew Sharp examines the call as well as several others in his latest Best/Worst article.

-Register-Guard columnist Austin Meek wrote about the bigger picture for the Ducks after the loss, wondering whether the result may lead to making the Ducks “more desensitized to losing”.

Moving past football, there are plenty of other sports on campus to talk about.

-Oregon cross country has jumped out to a fast start this season, thanks in part to the efforts of Edward Cheserek and Eric Jenkins.

-Oregon volleyball, which remains undefeated, will be faced with their biggest challenge so far this season. The Ducks take on No. 1 Stanford tonight, and the hope is that perhaps the upset will be in favor of Oregon this time.

-Oregon men’s club rugby head into the new season feeling as if they have been ‘snubbed’. In a preseason poll ranking the top rugby programs in the nation, the Ducks weren’t even mentioned in the top 30. Read a season preview of their team to see how the team has reacted.
