WIB helps members gain exposure to a wide variety of careers and industries. It also provides opportunities to network with successful businesswomen and learn how they got where they are.

Senior Kelsey Martin joined the club in fall 2013. Since then, she has worked her way to becoming the vice president of communications.

“It’s empowering to women,” Martin said.

Vice President Kelly Weiss became a part of WIB for similar motives.

“I joined my sophomore year hoping to build my resume and network, however that reason has changed drastically,” Weiss said. “Women in Business is now a family to me. It is a support system I cannot receive elsewhere and is the sole purpose I stuck with the challenges of the business school.”

As explained on its website, WIB’s goals are to help women “gain a sense of empowerment, individually and collectively” and “build connections both professionally and personally.” In order to achieve these goals, WIB organizes various panels and skill-building workshops, invites professional speakers to lecture and coordinates site visits and social events.

“I have learned to have a voice and not be afraid to take risks,” Weiss said. “For the first time in my life I believe I have the ability to stand out amongst men in the business world and lead with respect and a purpose.”

The encouraging environment is a common theme among reasons why members decided to join.

In addition to being a strong support system and learning experience, the WIB is a great networking tool.

“It has allowed me to meet a tremendous amount of inspiring businesswomen as well as students,” Weiss said. “It is so inspiring being around women who share a common goal and passion.”

For people interested in getting involved, club members meet biweekly from 6-7 p.m. on Tuesdays, and all are welcome. Some upcoming events include site visits to new companies in Seattle, Washington and Austin, Texas. For more information, visit their website at http://wib.uoregon.edu.
