Blaze burns through two-story duplex early Saturday morning

A one-alarm fire early Saturday morning burned through a two-story duplex, displacing 10 people and one dog, with no reported injuries.

The blaze, reported around 12:50 a.m., affected three residences on Martin Luther King Jr. Way between Haste Street and Dwight Way. The fire rendered the front duplex uninhabitable and took out the electricity in the back building, according to Battalion Chief Paul Cavagnaro, who was at the scene.

Berkeley Fire Department had the blaze under control about 30 minutes after personnel were dispatched to the area. Investigators believe the fire began on the landing in the rear of the front building and traveled up through the building’s eave and into its attic, Cavagnaro said. The back building was unaffected except for its dead electricity.

The residents of the affected buildings — 2434, 2436 and 2438 MLK Way — who did not stay with friends after the fire were housed by the American Red Cross. Five residents were displaced from the front duplex, and another five were displaced from the back single-story building.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but it looks to be accidental, according to Cavagnaro. Investigators will return to the scene Sunday to thoroughly examine the area in daylight.

Cavagnaro estimated that the fire caused $300,000 in damages.
