University to host Angelou’s memorial service

Family members of Maya Angelou have scheduled a private memorial service for the legendary author and activist on campus in Wait Chapel, to be held on June 7.

It was previously unclear whether a funeral would be held in Winston-Salem or in New York, N.Y., where Angelou also had a home. Angelou’s family is expected to release a statement on June 2 officially announcing the service, which is likely to be closed to the public.

Oprah Winfrey, the legendary television icon and a close friend of Angelou, has stated that she will be in attendance at the ceremony and has been asked to speak.

“I don’t know what I will say,” Winfrey said, “but it will just come.”

Although a list of attendees has not been made public, it is likely that other celebrities and potentially heads-of-state will arrive on campus for the memorial.

Despite the solemnity of the occasion—and the global affection for Angelou which has been expressed in the days since her death—members of the Westboro Baptist Church, a hate-group infamous for protesting the funerals of dead American soldiers, have stated their intent to picket the service via social media.

Angelou, who gained worldwide fame for her poems, autobiographies and message of love and tolerance, passed away at her home in Winston-Salem on May 28. She first joined the university as the Reynolds Professor of American Studies in 1982.
