Q&A with Oregon offensive lineman Tyler Johnstone on HBO series Game of Thrones

The Emerald spoke to Oregon offensive lineman Tyler Johnstone last Monday about the popular HBO series Game of Thrones, something he and his roommates watch religiously at 6 p.m. every Sunday night. Here is his take on the series, his favorite moments and where the rest of season 4 might go.

Spoiler Alert: The events talked about in this Q&A are up to date through the episode on Sunday, April 27.

In light of recent events, how happy were you that King Joffrey died?

Oh my god, it couldn’t have come any sooner. I mean, there was a little bit of celebration on Sunday night in our house when that happened and it rose a lot of debate as to who did it until this past week’s episode. I was right, everybody else was wrong, so there’s that.”

What did you think of the “Red Wedding”?

It was pretty traumatic, I went to therapy little bit for it. It was definitely a lot of trauma there. That’s one thing you got to watch out for in Game of Thrones though, they don’t care who they kill off. No one’s safe, but that’s what I like about the show.”

Where do you see the series heading now with Robb Stark and Joffrey Baratheon out of the picture?

“I know that Aria and ‘The Hound’ are going to Eyrie to meet her aunt and then Little Finger is taking Sansa to Eyrie to meet the aunt, so they’re going to meet up together and that’ll be interesting. Another interesting thing that I think is going to happen is if Bran and Jon Snow, see if they meet up, see if they will soon.”

What about Stannis Baratheon?

“That’s kind of hard to say. They haven’t really played much with Stannis this season. The Black Smith Apprentice, you don’t know what’s going on with him, if he’s still alive or not.”

Out of the Stark family, who is going to be rising to power for them?

“I don’t think he’ll necessarily be in power, but I think Bran is going to be the most important. Aria is definitely the killer of the family, while Sansa is staying low key, kind of learning the trust game right now. Aria is definitely cold blooded now.”

I have to ask you about your “lover” Daenerys. What’s going on there?

“I mean, there’s a lot of competition there with her. Everybody wants her, she’s beautiful. Like I said earlier, though, the only man she’s ever been into in the show was a huge dude, so I feel like I’ve got that advantage a little bit, just got to grow the hair out a little bit and get a fu-man-chu mustache. Who knows? Khal Johnstone sounds kind of nice.”
