The Emerald caught up with Baylis after Wednesday’s practice to ask him about his progression through spring ball.

How have spring practices been going for you?

“It’s been going pretty well. We’re kind of winding down our practices now here in week four but its been good to get the pads back on and get some good work in.”

How nice is it to have three tight ends that can step in and play?

“Depth at any position is great. I mean, getting fresh legs out there or just being in the right condition can really help our team out, a lot.”

How’s the relationship between you, Johnny Mundt and Pharaoh Brown?

“It’s really good. We all get along great. I came in the same time Pharaoh did and Johnny just fit right in. We all hang out and everything so it’s good.”

How have you improved from last spring to this one?

“Just being just way more knowledgeable of the game and not just getting myself in the right position but if someone else is out of position really helping them out and really studying.”

Do you model your game after a specific player?

“Not necessarily. I just kind of take what the coaches tell me and just what they want me to improve on. I don’t necessarily watch one person and be like, ‘That’s what I want to be like.”

How’s spring term, academically, going?

“It’s been good, it’s always a slow start in the first week, but now we’re in week four. So, things are really rolling and I’m just staying on top of my schoolwork.”

What do you want to take away from the spring game?

“Everything spring ball has been leading up to, just getting some good work in against everybody and just improving what I can and making myself more prepared for the fall.”

How was the adjustment to college football as a freshman?

“My first padded practice I had to do a three-on-three drill against Kiko (Alonso). So that was pretty awakening but everyone’s here for a reason so you just have to keep moving on from that stuff.
