Sigma Kappa plans to kick Alzheimer’s in kickball tournament – Third annual Kickin’ Grass Kickball Tournament

The Sigma Kappa sorority will be hosting their third annual Kickin’ Grass Kickball Tournament on Wednesday, April 16 on the front fields of UNC Charlotte.

Registration for each team is $50 and can be done online or at the Sigma Kappa house.  Teams will consist of nine to 12 players with each player paying four to five dollars to participate.

Most teams are made up of organizations but some teams will simply consist of groups of friends.

“As well as our Sigma Kappa team we even have a team made up our boyfriends,” said Amanda Myers, Sigma Kappa public relations chairman.

In addition to hosting a kickball tournament, the event will also feature numerous venders with giveaways for students.  Some venders include Jimmy Johns, Pelicans and Aspen.  The winning team will be awarded a trophy.

All proceeds from the event will go to Alzheimer’s prevention and care.

“What people really do not know is that Alzheimer’s is more common in women and it is actually a larger killer than breast cancer,” said Myers.

As well as raising money to fight Alzheimer’s, Myers hopes participants leave with a better understanding of the disease and its effects on those who live with it.

Five million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer’s and someone develops the disease every 67 seconds.  It is also the sixth leading cause of death currently in the United states.

Alzheimer’s is a disease that affects many people, even people who may not directly suffer from the disease.

“A lot of our sisters have family affected by this disease, my grandmother is in the early stages of it,” shared Myers.

One thing that Myers hopes comes out of the event is that more members of the community come together and meet each other.

“It will be a fun day to be active and get to know each other,” said Myers.
