Sink considers rematch in Fla.’s 13th district

Alumna and trustee Alex Sink (’70) told the Old Gold & Black April 10 that she will not run for Congress in 2016 “unless [she’s] running as the incumbent [in Fla.’s 13th Congressional district]“, ruling out the possibility of postponing a run for two years.

Sink, a democrat who served as the state’s chief financial officer, was the party’s nominee for governor in 2010, narrowly losing to republican Rick Scott. Last month, Sink ran in the special election for the state’s 13th congressional district which was vacated with the death of Rep. Bill Young, who represented the district for 40 years.

“I’m not running in 2016, I will say that,” Sink said, calling the decision “definitive.”

Just in the last few days, some political analysts have said it might be more beneficial for Sink to wait and run in 2016 when voter turnout is likely to be higher in the midst of a presidential election, a notion that she debunked today.

With only weeks remaining until the filing deadline for Sink to run against Rep. David Jolly, who she narrowly lost to in the special election on March 11, democratic officials have been lobbying Sink to run again in November. She says she still has not yet made a decision, noting that she still has some time before having to officially declare.

“No, I haven’t [decided whether to run in Nov.],” she said. “I’ve got a little bit of time left.” Alex_Sink
