‘Boring’ game suits Cougars well

“We need to play a nice, boring game,” said head coach Todd Whitting. “We tend to do some amazing things, and we also do some crazy, unorthodox things.”

The desired “boring” game fell somewhere between the amazing and crazy games of the past thanks to the strength of the Cougars’ pitching staff.

The Cougars took the lead by early scoring four runs in the second inning. After Texas State starting pitcher Dylan Bein gave up a single to junior outfielder Michael Pyeatt, he then walked the next three batters to give UH a 1-0 lead and load the bases for sophomore right fielder Kyle Survance. Survance cleared the bases with a two-out triple to the right-center field wall, but the inning came to a close early as he missed second base and was called out after the Bobcats’ appeal.

The pitching staff lived up to its No. 1 national ranking Tuesday night as it held the Texas State Bobcats to one run.

Starting junior pitcher David Longville pitched four innings, giving up only two hits, one walk and the Bobcats’ only run.

“My last few starts I’ve been trying to do too much,” Longville said. “I just tried to have fun today, and that’s the biggest thing out here.”

Freshman pitcher Andrew Lantrip came into the game in the fifth inning to continue holding the Bobcats at bay. Lantrip threw for four scoreless innings and allowed only one hit, bringing the Bobcats’ game total to three.

“I just came in throwing a bunch of fastballs and let the hitters put the ball in play to let the defense do what they do,” Lantrip said. “I just tried to command the strike zone, and I couldn’t have asked for more out of Longville’s start.”

The Cougars hope to come off strong from their midweek win to go into their series against No. 10 Louisville this weekend at Cougar Field.
