App review: Yik Yak

A new app has been making its way around college campuses all over the East Coast called Yik Yak. This new app is just like Twitter except the users post things anonymously and use up to 200 characters; however, you can’t post pictures or use emojis. When you send out a “Yak” only the first 500 people in a five mile radius can see your Yak.

Many UNC Charlotte students are using this app and it is a great pass time. Most of the people on Yik Yak on campus post things about being for or against Greek life or posting about people they see on campus that they find attractive or how they wish the weather was warmer.
After using this app for about two weeks, I have seen some posts that were very racist and some bullying people. Since the app is anonymous, people feel that it is okay to talk badly about people. Yik Yak was invented for college students to post about things going on around campus, how they like or dislike the class that they are in and things of that nature.

When I first started using the app, it was mostly people talking about Greek life and what sorority or fraternity they should rush in the fall. Now people have started posting names, first and last. I am not the type of person to let things that people say about me get to me, but some people can get really hurt from this app.

The app was fun for a while, and sometimes is entertaining to read during class, but only bad things can come from it if people are not careful about what they say.

On the app, you can like or dislike a post. If the post gets enough dislikes, it will get deleted off the app. That is a good thing that if people do say something racist or something disrespectful it can get taken down. If you Google the app, there are many articles that come up about how the makers of it have set up a wall so kids on middle school and high school campus’ cannot access the app because of the bullying that was going on because of the app.

Though I do not totally agree with the app, I do still have it on my phone and I do check on it when I am bored in class. It is entertaining and if you are going to use the app, I suggest that you do not take it too seriously if there is something posted about you or something that you do not agree with.
