Fashion: No hair, don’t care

The look is simple; first one must have hair that is longer than a pixie cut, then either a portion of one side of their head, or the whole side is shaven off. The look can take a lot of people off guard and it is not an impulse decision to make because growing it out will probably be a nightmare.

Noelle Petrowski, a student at the University of Oregon, took the risk and shaved the sides of her head in July.

“I told the stylist that I loved my curls, but didn’t really like anything else, so she suggested we just shave everything else off, keeping the curly parts I liked the best. So that’s what she did and I had a mohawk!”

She says that she loved how it was when it was first shaved. “My head was so soft,” she said. Since July it has grown a little but she still loves it and doesn’t plan on going back to long hair.

The initial question is why has this become such a popular trend? Petrowski said, “I think people are starting to get past the idea that girls have to have long hair to be considered attractive. And I hope that people are getting over the idea that hair length has anything to do with sexuality.”

To pull off this look it definitely takes guts and the attitude that one does not care what others think about them.

“I do feel like shaving your head takes a lot of confidence. First there’s the insecurity that you won’t look good with short hair, and then there’s the fact that you’re deliberately shaving off what people always defined as pretty and feminine,” Petrowski said.

It’s a trend that will most likely have a life span as short as the hair shaven off. It takes confidence to rock this look and it is not for everyone, but for the few who have dared to try it, like Petrowski, they seem to love it and not want to go back.
