University Police report off-campus burglary

On April 18 between 9 pm and 11:30 pm, University Police reported that unidentified thieves broke into a privately-owned student residence and stole two vehicles, electronics, jewelry, cash and other items. University Police reported that the students were not present at the time of the incident. The Winston-Salem Police Department has opened an investigation into the burglary.

This burglary comes off a series of burglaries and break-ins that have occurred off campus, but which have affected university students.

According to an email statement from the Office of Communications and External Relations, the University has decided to establish a task force designed to evaluate issues of safety and security both on and off campus.

In addition, the email stated that this step follows on the heels of increased foot and car patrols of campus areas and closing the gates from 6 pm to 6 am. University Police has also increased patrols around South Campus. The university is also planning to construct a fence to close off areas of North Campus.

“I am glad that they are starting to increase security measures off-campus,” junior Emily Zier said. “I think, however, that they should have done this already. Off-campus students are just as important as on-campus students and patrols should extend to them as well.”

If you have any information or would like to report suspicious activity, call 911 or 336-758-5911 if you are on campus, or call 911 if you are off campus. University Police also encourages students to visit the University Police, Wake Alert and Wake Ready websites, or to download the WFUPD SaferCampus mobile app.
