Tampa brings Florida students closer to RNC

According to a statement released late Saturday by the Republican National Committee, the Republican National Convention’s scheduled events for Monday will be postponed until Tuesday due to severe weather caused by the oncoming Tropical Storm Isaac.

“Due to the severe weather reports for the Tampa Bay area, the Republican National Convention will convene on Monday, Aug. 27, and immediately recess until Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 28,” Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said in a Saturday statement.

Beginning Tuesday, the city of Tampa will host more than 4,000 Republican delegates and alternate delegates for the Republican National Convention, marking the third time the convention has been held in Florida and signifying the end of this year’s presidential primary season.

The convention, which will be held in the Tampa Bay Times Forum, will continue throughout Thursday and will host 2,286 delegates, 2,125 alternate delegates and a swarm of about 15,000 media.

GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney will be attending the convention along with his recently announced running mate, Wisconsin Representative Paul Ryan. The convention is expected to formalize Romney’s status as the official candidate of the Republican Party.

The convention will also be unveiling their new Facebook app called the Convention Without Walls, which will give individuals the opportunity to keep up to date with the happenings of the convention.

Riley Baldree, a member of Florida State’s College Republicans expressed his elation with the accessibility the online app will bring to those who will not be attending the convention in person.

“It’s really fantastic that we’ll be able to keep up with the what’s going on at the Republican National Convention,” said Baldree. “A lot of students here won’t have the opportunity to attend because of classes and other commitments, so this allows us to stay up to date. It’s the next best thing to being at the convention and I think a lot of students will appreciate it.”

But despite the convention’s accessibility, weather conditions from what has become Tropical Storm Isaac threaten the convention’s waterfront location with severe rains and winds. Although the Tampa area is not directly in the storm’s projected path, RNC officials have stated that weather precautions have been taken.

“The Republican National Convention and the Republican National Committee, working in consultation with the Romney/Ryan campaign, are in regular contact with the National Weather Service […],” said Republican National Convention President and CEO, William Harris, in a Thursday statement. “Gov. Scott and local emergency officials have assured us that they have the resources in place to respond to this storm should it make landfall.”

Still onset of turbulent weather hasn’t decreased enthusiasm for the convention. With approximately 15,000 media members expected to attend, the convention is rivaled only by the 2012 London Olympics in terms of media coverage.

And with the Presidential Election less than three months away, the convention’s Florida location has energized many FSU students interested in politics.

“The fact that the Republican Party is holding the convention in Florida is really exciting,” said Baldree. “This only happens once every four years, so for it to take place in our state is really unique. It puts Florida on the political map, especially seeing as how our state is such a crucial swing state for both parties.”
