Voter turnout low at campus polling places for Illinois primary

Polling places on campus are relatively quiet because of spring break, officials say.

In addition to U. Illinois, Parkland College and many grade schools in Champaign also have spring break this week.

“I have no doubt that (spring break) is going to reduce the number of people who vote today,” said Gordy Hulten, Champaign County Clerk.

Betty Earle, director of operations at the University YMCA, said turnout has been very light so far at the University YMCA polling station.

“I checked in with (election) judges around 11 o’clock and no one had been here,” she said. “This is probably because our precinct is about 95 percent students.”

The McKinley Foundation has also had light voter turnout today, said election judge Al Rehberg. He said he does not know if the vacation is responsible for the low turnout.

Just because students are not voting today does not mean that they are not voting at all. There were about 3,000 early voters, said Shana Harrison, president of the Illini Democrats. Harrison said that this primary is a significant primary.

“This is the first time Illinois’ ballots … mean a lot,” she said. “For Republicans, this may be an incentive to turn out and vote.”
